More Than the Costume

ਧੋਤੀ ਊਜਲ ਤਿਲਕੁ ਗਲਿ ਮਾਲਾ ॥
Dhotee oojal tilak gal maalaa.
He may wear a clean loin-cloth, apply the ceremonial mark to his forehead, and wear a mala around his neck;
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਪੜਹਿ ਨਾਟ ਸਾਲਾ ॥
antar kroDh parheh naat saalaa.
but if there is anger within him, he is merely reading his part, like an actor in a play.
ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਮਦੁ ਪੀਆ ॥
naam visaar maa-i-aa mad pee-aa.
Forgetting the Naam, the Name of the Lord, he drinks in the wine of Maya.
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਭਗਤਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਸੁਖੁ ਥੀਆ ॥੪॥
bin gur bhagat naahee sukh thee-aa. ||4||
Without devotional worship to the Guru, there is no peace. ||4||

In plain words

You can put on all the right outfits and marks and beads, and look perfectly holy on the outside.

But if anger is bubbling inside, it is a bit like an actor in a costume playing a part. Peace comes from what is happening in your heart.

Peace lives in the heart, under whatever you wear.
The deeper layer

Outer dress cannot hide inner anger.

Dhotee oojal tilak gal maalaa — a clean white cloth, a tilak (a mark on the forehead) and a maalaa (prayer beads) around the neck. All of it can look very holy. But antar krodh parheh naat saalaa — with anger inside, it is like reading lines in a playhouse. Krodh means anger.

Think of an actor dressed as a king. The crown does not make him one. This is true in any tradition. It is aimed at empty show, never at any group. Forgetting the Name, a person drinks the wine of maya. Without loving devotion to the Guru, there is no peace.

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever seen someone look one way on the outside but act differently inside?
