Let the Name Live in You

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਸੈ ਮਨਿ ਚੀਤਿ ॥

Serving the True Guru, the Naam shall dwell in your conscious mind.

Meeting with the Guru, the Name of the Lord comes to mind. Without the Name, other loves are false. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Serve the Guru, and the Naam comes to live in your mind and your thoughts.

Meeting the Guru, you remember the Naam. Without the Naam, every other love is false.

One love stays when the others come and go -- let it make its home in you.
The deeper layer

Serve the Guru, and the Naam comes to live in your mind.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line at the center of this long song by Guru Amar Das. Satgur sayv naam vasai man cheet — serving the True Guru, the Name comes to live in your mind. Naam means the Name, the living presence of the One. Bin naavai hor jhooth pareet — without the Name, other loves are jhooth, false.

Here jhooth doesn't mean worthless. It means they come and go. Think of a favorite toy you loved at five. It mattered then, and then it passed. The love of the One stays.

A Question to Sit With

What is a love or friendship that has stayed steady in your life?
