Sikhism·Raag Bilaaval·Shabad 153
Verse 7 of 9

Eyes, Ears, and a Softened Heart

nainee daykh daras man tariptai sarvan banee gur sabad suna-ee-aa.
Gazing upon the Blessed Vision of His Darshan with my eyes, my mind is satisfied; with my ears, I listen to the Guru's Bani, and the Word of His Shabad.
sun sun aatam dayv hai bheenay ras ras raam gopaal rava-ee-aa. ||6||
Listening, listening, my soul is softened, delighted by His subtle essence, chanting the Name of the Lord of the Universe. ||6||

In plain words

When I look with open eyes, I start to see the One everywhere. My restless mind finally feels full and content.

When I listen to the Guru's words, something inside me softens, like hard ground soaking up warm rain. The whole of me feels glad and alive.

Looking with love and listening deeply soften the whole heart.
The deeper layer

Eyes that see the One and ears that listen open the heart.

Nainee daykh daras man tariptai: seeing the One with my eyes, my mind feels full. Daras means a loving sight of the One. Sarvan banee gur sabad suna-ee-aa: with my ears I listen to the banee, the Guru's words. Japji Sahib calls this deep listening suniai.

Then sun sun aatam dayv hai bheenay. Listening again and again, the soul becomes bheenay, soaked and softened. Think of a hard, dry sponge that turns soft in warm water. Seeing and listening together open the heart.

A Question to Sit With

When has listening closely to something changed how you felt inside?
