Sikhism·Raag Bilaaval·Shabad 153
Verse 8 of 9

One Impartial Eye

tarai gun maa-i-aa mohi vi-aapay turee-aa gun hai gurmukh lahee-aa.
In the grip of the three qualities, they are engrossed in love and attachment to Maya; only as Gurmukh do they find the absolute quality, absorption in bliss.
ayk darisat sabh sam kar jaanai nadree aavai sabh barahm pasra-ee-aa. ||7||
With a single, impartial eye, look upon all alike, and see God pervading all. ||7||

In plain words

It is easy to get caught up in wanting, avoiding, and drifting. These everyday pulls keep us busy and a little restless.

But there is a calmer, deeper place beyond all that. From there you see with one fair and even gaze. The same One shines in every single person, no one higher, no one lower.

From the calmest place inside, you see the same One in everyone.
The deeper layer

From a calm place inside, you see everyone as equal.

Tarai gun maa-i-aa: the three gun, or pulls, of Maya, the world's dazzle. Think of them as wanting, avoiding and drifting. They keep people caught up in clinging. Turee-aa gun is the fourth state, a calm, deep place beyond those three pulls. It is also called sahj, easy peace, and the gurmukh, one who faces the Guru, reaches it.

From there comes ayk darisat sabh sam kar jaanai: one fair eye that sees everyone as equal. Sabh barahm pasra-ee-aa: the One is spread through all. Think of the sun, which shines on every house the same. This is a strong verse about equality and oneness.

A Question to Sit With

What would change if you looked at everyone as equal -- no one above, no one below?
