Sikhism·Raag Bilaaval·Shabad 159
Verse 7 of 9

Held by Those Who Love

ਹਰਿ ਸਰਣਿ ਸੂਰ ਗੁਪਾਲ ॥
har saran soor gupaal.
I seek the Sanctuary of the Lord, the Heroic Lord of the World.
ਪ੍ਰਭ ਭਗਤ ਵਸਿ ਦਇਆਲ ॥
parabh bhagat vas da-i-aal.
The Merciful Lord God is under the power of His devotees.
ਹਰਿ ਨਿਗਮ ਲਹਹਿ ਨ ਭੇਵ ॥
har nigam laheh na bhayv.
The Vedas do not know the Mystery of the Lord.
ਨਿਤ ਕਰਹਿ ਮੁਨਿ ਜਨ ਸੇਵ ॥੬॥
nit karahi mun jan sayv. ||6||
The silent sages constantly serve Him. ||6||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I take shelter with the brave and generous One.

The Merciful One is, in a way, held by the love of those who love -- so gladly does He come to them. Even the oldest books can't fully map the mystery, yet quiet, thoughtful people serve it happily every day.

*Love can reach what even the wisest books cannot explain.*
The deeper layer

prabh bhagat vas da-i-aal -- the tender paradox: the Merciful One is 'under the power' of His devotees' love. nigam laheh na bhayv -- even the Vedas cannot find the mystery, while mun jan (silent sages) simply serve. Love reaches what scholarship cannot.

A Question to Sit With

What have you understood through love that you couldn't learn just by studying?
