As the Fish Loves the Water

parabh tujh binaa nahee hor.
Without You, God, there is no other at all.
man pareet chand chakor.
My mind loves You, as the partridge loves the moon,
ji-o meen jal si-o hayt.
as the fish loves the water,
al kamal bhinn na bhayt.
as the bee and the lotus cannot be separated.
ji-o chakvee sooraj aas.
As the chakvi bird longs for the sun,
naanak charan pi-aas. ||6||
so does Nanak thirst for the Lord's feet. ||6||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Without You there is nothing else for me at all.

My heart loves You the way the partridge loves the moon, the way a fish loves the water, the way a bee and a flower can't be pulled apart, the way the little bird longs for the sun. Nanak says: that is how I thirst for the feet of the One.

*Love can be as natural as a fish loving the water.*
The deeper layer

The first wave of similes. chand chakor, meen jal, al kamal, chakvi sooraj -- classic images of love that cannot be separated. What matters is how natural the love is: as native as breathing.

A Question to Sit With

What do you love so naturally you never even have to try?
