Verse 10 of 11

As the Songbird Longs for Rain

kurank naadai nayhu.
As the deer loves the sound of the bell,
chaatrik chaahat mayhu.
and as the song-bird longs for the rain,
jan jeevnaa satsang.
the Lord's humble servant lives in the Society of the Saints,
gobid bhajnaa rang.
lovingly meditating and vibrating upon the Lord of the Universe.
rasnaa bakhaanai naam.
My tongue chants the Naam, the Name of the Lord.
naanak darsan daan. ||9||
Please bless Nanak with the gift of the Blessed Vision of Your Darshan. ||9||

In plain words

Think how a deer loves the sound of the bell, and how the little rainbird longs for the rain to come.

That is how the One's friend loves to live in the Sangat, keeping the One in mind with joy and saying the Naam. Nanak says: grant me the gift of one loving glimpse.

*Longing for what is good becomes a joyful way to live.*
The deeper layer

kurank naadai nayhu, chaatrik chaahat mayhu -- the deer and the bell, the rainbird and the rain. These resolve into jan jeevnaa satsang -- the servant's life is the Sangat and joyful remembrance. Longing turns into a happy way of living.

A Question to Sit With

What good thing do you look forward to the way the rainbird waits for rain?
