Kindness Is the True Fast

du-aadasee da-i-aa daan kar jaanai.
The Twelfth Day: Know, and practice, compassion and charity.
baahar jaato bheetar aanai.
Bring your out-going mind back home.
bartee barat rahai nihkaam.
Observe the fast of remaining free of desire.
ajpaa jaap japai mukh naam.
Chant the unchanted Chant of the Naam with your mouth.
teen bhavan meh ayko jaanai.
Know that the One Lord is contained in the three worlds.
sabh such sanjam saach pachhaanai. ||16||
Purity and self-discipline are all contained in knowing the Truth. ||16||

In plain words

On this day, here is what makes a day holy: kindness and generosity. Learn them, and live them.

Bring your wandering mind back home to the One. The truest fast is simply letting go of always wanting more -- and the deepest remembrance is the quiet one that hums in you even without words.

Once you know that the One fills everything, everywhere, you do not need a long list of rules to be pure. Living from that truth is the whole discipline.

Kindness and a heart turned home make any day holy.
The deeper layer

duaadasi, the twelfth day again. This is the poem's strongest statement of the whole theme: da-i-aa daan -- compassion and charity -- are what make the day sacred, exactly the Baarah Maaha epilogue's move (and Magh's stanza, where pilgrimage yields to kindness to all beings). ajpaa jaap -- the "unspoken remembrance" that continues on its own, alive in the heart. Purity is relocated from ritual to knowing the Truth.

A Question to Sit With

Whose day could you make a little brighter with one kind act?
