Sikhism·Raag Bilaaval·Shabad 163
Verse 9 of 11

The Understanding Is Kindled in Us

manmukh mareh mar bigtee jaahi.
The self-willed manmukhs die, and dead, they fall into the most evil state.
ayk na cheeteh doojai lobhaahi.
They do not remember the One Lord; they are deluded by duality.
achayt pindee agi-aan anDhaar.
The human body is unconscious, ignorant and blind.
bin sabdai ki-o paa-ay paar.
Without the Word of the Shabad, how can anyone cross over?
aap upaa-ay upaavanhaar.
The Creator Himself creates.
aapay keeton gur veechaar. ||8||
He Himself contemplates the Guru's Word. ||8||

In plain words

When a heart turns away and forgets the One, it can drift through life half-asleep, pulled around by wanting more and never quite understanding.

On our own, we can be a bit like that -- not seeing clearly. So how does anyone wake up? The same One that made us is the one that kindles the understanding inside us. The waking-up is a gift, and it is offered to everyone.

We do not wake ourselves up alone -- the understanding is kindled in us, and it is offered to everyone.
The deeper layer

manmukh -- the self-willed heart, forgetting the One, drifting half-asleep through life. achayt... agiaan andhaar -- the unawakened, unseeing state, gentled. The turn is grace: aap upaa-ay... aapay keeton gur veechaar -- the Maker both creates us and kindles the understanding in us. We do not wake ourselves alone, and the waking is offered to all.

A Question to Sit With

What is something that finally clicked for you when someone helped you see it?
