Awake in the Dew-Fresh Morning

bhinrhee rain bhalee dinas suhaa-ay raam.
The night is beautiful, drenched with dew, and the day is delightful,
nij ghar soot-rhee-ay piram jagaa-ay raam.
when her Husband Lord wakes the sleeping soul-bride, in the home of the self.
nav haan nav Dhan sabad jaagee aapnay pir bhaanee-aa.
The young bride has awakened to the Word of the Shabad; she is pleasing to her Husband Lord.
taj koorh kapat subhaa-o doojaa chaakree lokaanee-aa.
So renounce falsehood, fraud, love of duality and working for people.
mai naam har kaa haar kanthay saach sabad neesaani-aa.
The Name of the Lord is my necklace, and I am anointed with the True Shabad.
kar jorh naanak saach maagai nadar kar tuDh bhaani-aa. ||2||
With his palms pressed together, Nanak begs for the gift of the True Name; please, bless me with Your Grace, through the pleasure of Your Will. ||2||

In plain words

The night is lovely, soft with dew, and the day is bright — because something inside me woke up while I was asleep to it, right in my own home.

Freshly awake to the Word, I let go of pretending, of tricks, of doing things just to impress people.

The Name of the One is like a necklace I wear; the true Word is the mark I carry. Nanak says: with my hands pressed together I ask, simply, for what is true — and for a kind glance to fall on me.

When something inside wakes up, even an ordinary morning turns beautiful.
The deeper layer

Nij ghar — the home of the self: the waking happens within, not somewhere else. Piram jagaa-ay — the Beloved wakes the sleeper. The renouncing of falsehood, fraud and chaakree lokaanee (working just to please people) becomes living for the One instead of performing for others. Har kaa haar kanThay: the Name worn as a necklace. And nadar — the grace-glance — is received, not earned.

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever woken up to something that was there all along?
