The One Has Made My Life Worthwhile

ਹਰਿ ਕੀਆ ਹੈ ਸਫਲ ਜਨਮੁ ਹਮਾਰਾ ॥

Joining the Sangat, the Holy Congregation, I sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||1||

In plain words

The One has made my whole life worthwhile and full.

I held the One in mind — the One who gently carries pain away — and I met the Guru, the giver of freedom. My life's journey has borne fruit, and now, joining the Sangat, I sing the One's praises.

A life turns fruitful when it meets the Guru who frees it — and ripens best in the Sangat.
The deeper layer

Safal janam — a fruitful life — is the verse's refrain of gratitude. Meeting the mukat daataa (giver of freedom) is what makes the jaataa (journey) fruitful; the fruit ripens in the Sangat, singing together.

Mil sangtee gun gaavno — joining the Sangat, I sing the praises. That is the Sangat — people gathered together to remember the One. Think of a choir: each voice sounds fuller next to the others.

A Question to Sit With

What has made your life feel most worthwhile, and who did you share it with?
