Prays Nanak, O Lord, please bless me with Your Mercy, that I may sing Your songs of bliss. ||1||
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
In plain words
There is only One. And the One is found by the True Guru's grace — a gift that is always here, waiting for an open heart.
Come, dear friends, gather close, and let us sing the glad songs of the One we love.
Let us set down our pride — that puffed-up feeling — so we can grow dear to the One. Let go of pride, clinging, and going in two directions at once, and simply serve the One, pure and bright.
Holding the shelter of the kind One's feet, sadness scatters. Glad to serve among those who serve, I set my restlessness down and stop chasing in every direction. Nanak prays: be kind, so I can sing your joy.
Setting down pride is what lets you grow close — to the One and to each other.
The deeper layer
Sakhee aa-o — come, companions: a communal invitation. Taj maan: set down pride, haumai. Being the daas daasee (slave of slaves) means being glad to serve among those who serve. Taj udaasee: set down sadness. BahuRh biDhee na Dhaavaa: stop chasing in a hundred directions. Naanak pa-iampai: Nanak submits humbly, prays.
