When Fear Runs Away On Its Own

salok mehlaa 3.
Shalok, Third Mehl:
Fraud and hypocrisy within bring constant pain; the self-willed manmukh does not practice meditation.
dukh vich kaar kamaavnee dukh vartai dukh aagai.
Suffering in pain, he does his deeds; he is immersed in pain, and he shall suffer in pain hereafter.
karmee satgur bhaytee-ai taa sach naam liv laagai.
By his karma, he meets the True Guru, and then, he is lovingly attuned to the True Name.
naanak sehjay sukh ho-ay andrahu bharam bha-o bhaagai. ||1||
O Nanak, he is naturally at peace; doubt and fear run away and leave him. ||1||

In plain words

When someone hides things and stays closed inside, a low, steady ache settles in, and the mind can't grow still.

Doing everything from that pinched place makes the days themselves feel heavy.

But grace brings a person to the Guru, and then the heart tunes gently to the True Name.

Nanak says: peace arrives on its own, and doubt and fear simply get up and leave.

When peace settles in, fear and doubt don't have to be fought -- they just leave.
The deeper layer

The first of three Guru Amar Das shaloks set before the seventh Pauri. Kapat (hiding things, keeping a closed and crooked heart) is named as a source of dukh -- ache. The picture is compassionate: this is a painful condition, not a verdict. The release comes by grace: karmee satgur bhaytee-ai. And the resolution is beautifully passive -- bharam bha-o bhaagai, "doubt and fear run away" -- you don't have to fight them off; they leave when peace moves in.

A Question to Sit With

Has a worry ever melted away by itself once you felt safe again?
