Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
You are beyond my reach, and yet You shaped everything there is.
You Yourself are spread through the whole world, present in every corner of it.
You are the one lost in deep stillness, and You are the one singing the praise -- both at once.
So keep the One in your heart, day and night; in the end it is what carries you home.
Everyone who serves the One finds peace, folded gently into the Name.
The first numbered Pauri (Guru Ram Das). It opens the ladder with the biggest possible frame: the One is agamm (beyond grasp) yet aapay aap vartdaa (Himself pervading all) -- far beyond us and close to us in the same breath. And a mystical touch: the One is both the meditator and the praise being sung. For a child this is the reassurance that the vastness that made everything is not distant -- it is nearer than near, and serving it is simply resting in what already holds you.
Does it feel bigger or smaller to you that the same One is in every single thing?
