Wake Up And Keep The Name Close

mehlaa 3.
Third Mehl:
manmukh mailay mareh gavaar.
The filthy, foolish, self-willed manmukhs die.
gurmukh nirmal har raakhi-aa ur Dhaar.
The Gurmukhs are immaculate and pure; they keep the Lord enshrined within their hearts.
bhanat naanak sunhu jan bhaa-ee.
Prays Nanak, listen, O Siblings of Destiny!
satgur sayvihu ha-umai mal jaa-ee.
Serve the True Guru, and the filth of your ego shall be gone.
andar sansaa dookh vi-aapay sir DhanDhaa nit maar.
Deep within, the pain of skepticism afflicts them; their heads are constantly assaulted by worldly entanglements.
Asleep in the love of duality, they never wake up; they are attached to the love of Maya.
naam na cheeteh sabad na vichaareh ih manmukh kaa beechaar.
They do not remember the Name, and they do not contemplate the Word of the Shabad; this is the view of the self-willed manmukhs.
har naam na bhaa-i-aa birthaa janam gavaa-i-aa naanak jam maar karay khu-aar. ||3||
They do not love the Lord's Name, and they lose their life uselessly. O Nanak, the Messenger of Death attacks them, and humiliates them. ||3||

In plain words

Some hearts stay clouded and forgetful; others keep the One held close and stay clear inside.

Nanak says: listen, friends -- serve the Guru, and the film of ego washes away.

When a mind is asleep in wanting-two-things, it doesn't wake, and stays tangled in the pull of things.

To leave the Name unremembered is to let a precious life slip past.

So stay awake, keep the One in mind, weigh the Word -- and a whole life opens up.

Staying awake to what matters keeps a whole life from quietly slipping by.
The deeper layer

The third shalok of the set (Guru Amar Das). Its contrast runs between forgetting and remembering: manmukh mailay -- the self-turned heart, clouded and asleep -- and gurmukh nirmal -- the heart turned toward the Guru, clear and awake. The closing figure of the Messenger of Death is left aside here, so that only the call remains. Soo-tay kabahu na jaageh -- "asleep, never waking" -- becomes the gentle call to wake up, not a threat. The teaching kept, the fear removed.

A Question to Sit With

What helps you stay “awake” to the things that matter most, instead of drifting?
