Save The World With Mercy

salok mehlaa 3.
Shalok, Third Mehl:
jagat jalandaa rakh lai aapnee kirpaa Dhaar.
The world is going up in flames - shower it with Your Mercy, and save it!
jit du-aarai ubrai titai laihu ubaar.
Save it, and deliver it, by whatever method it takes.
satgur sukh vaykhaali-aa sachaa sabad beechaar.
The True Guru has shown the way to peace, contemplating the True Word of the Shabad.
naanak avar na sujh-ee har bin bakhsanhaar. ||1||
Nanak knows no other than the Lord, the Forgiving Lord. ||1||

In plain words

The world is feverish and burning up -- so let Your mercy pour over it and keep it safe.

Whatever door will save it, save it by that door.

The Guru has shown the way to peace: resting in the true Word.

Nanak says: I know no other than the One, who forgives and forgives.

The truest prayer is not for yourself alone but that the whole world be held and kept safe.
The deeper layer

A Guru Amar Das shalok, and one of Gurbani's most famous lines: jagat jalandaa rakh lai -- "the world is burning; save it." Jalandaa (burning) is read as feverish restlessness, not literal fire. What is striking is its scope: this is a prayer of mercy for the whole world, not just the devout -- jit du-aarai ubrai titai laihu ubaar, save it by whatever door works. The heart of the Vaar's compassion, and a charter for caring about everyone. The One is named simply bakhsanhaar -- the forgiving One.

A Question to Sit With

If you could ask for one good thing for the whole world, what would you ask for?
