ਮਃ ੧ ॥
mehlaa 1.
First Mehl:
ਜਿਸੁ ਮਨਿ ਵਸਿਆ ਤਰਿਆ ਸੋਇ ॥
jis man vasi-aa tari-aa so-ay.
He alone is carried across, within whose mind the Lord abides.
ਨਾਨਕ ਜੋ ਭਾਵੈ ਸੋ ਹੋਇ ॥੨॥
naanak jo bhaavai so ho-ay. ||2||
O Nanak, that alone happens, which is pleasing to His Will. ||2||
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
The one in whose mind the One lives is carried safely across.
Nanak says: what pleases the One is what comes to be.
Carry the One inside, and rest in the way life flows.
The second Guru Nanak shalok (Mehl 1). Two lines, deeply calm. Jis man vasi-aa tari-aa so-ay -- the one who carries the One inside is carried across. And jo bhaavai so ho-ay -- what accords with the flow of existence is what happens. This is not fatalism; it is sahaj, the peace of not fighting the current, resting in the way things move. Paired with the previous shalok, the two First-Guru couplets together teach humility about outcomes.
A Question to Sit With
What is the difference between giving up and peacefully accepting what you can't change?
