The Life That Bears Fruit

mehlaa 3.
Third Mehl:
satgur kee sayv na keetee-aa sabad na lago bhaa-o.
One who does not serve the True Guru, and who does not love the Word of the Shabad,
ha-umai rog kamaavanaa at deeragh baho su-aa-o.
earns the very painful disease of egotism; he is so very selfish.
manhath karam kamaavnay fir fir jonee paa-ay.
Acting stubborn-mindedly, he is reincarnated over and over again.
gurmukh janam safal hai jis no aapay la-ay milaa-ay.
The birth of the Gurmukh is fruitful and auspicious. The Lord unites him with Himself.
naanak nadree nadar karay taa naam Dhan palai paa-ay. ||2||
O Nanak, when the Merciful Lord grants His Mercy, one obtains the wealth of the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||2||

In plain words

When someone never serves the Guru and never lets the Word warm them, a lonely, grasping ache sets in.

Living only for the self is a heavy, tiring way to be, and it keeps the same restless circle turning.

But a life turned toward the Guru bears fruit, gathered gently into the One.

Nanak says: when grace touches you, the true wealth -- the Naam -- quietly lands in your hands.

A life spent only on yourself feels heavy; a life turned outward bears fruit.
The deeper layer

A Guru Amar Das shalok. Ha-umai rog (ego-disease) and deeragh (long, chronic) describe self-absorption as a wearying condition, not a crime. Fir fir jonee (again and again) is gentled to "the same restless circle." Set against it: gurmukh janam safal -- the life turned toward the teaching is fruitful. And the fruit is not earned but received -- nadree nadar karay -- when grace lands. The balance is gentle: the hard state is described with compassion, and the good state is a gift, not a wage.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you did lately that was more about others than about yourself -- and how did it feel?
