Sikhism·Raag Bilaaval·Shabad 176
Verse 5 of 5

You Fill Everything

ਕਹੁ ਕਬੀਰ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਾਧਵਾ ਤੂ ਸਰਬ ਬਿਆਪੀ ॥
kaho kabeer mayray maaDhvaa too sarab bi-aapee.
Says Kabir, O my Lord, You are contained in all.
ਤੁਮ ਸਮਸਰਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਦਇਆਲੁ ਮੋਹਿ ਸਮਸਰਿ ਪਾਪੀ ॥੪॥੩॥
tum samsar naahee da-i-aal mohi samsar paapee. ||4||3||
There is none as merciful as You are, and none as sinful as I am. ||4||3||

In plain words

Kabir says: my Beloved, You are everywhere — inside everything, holding it all together.

There is no one as kind as You. And I come to You with empty hands, holding nothing to bargain with — just my need for You.

Come to the Kindness with empty hands — that is enough.
The deeper layer

The One fills everything, and no one is as kind as the One.

Kaho kabeer mayray maadhvaa means "Kabir says, O my Maadhvaa," a loving name for the One. Too sarab bi-aapee means "You are spread through all things."

Tum samsar naahee da-i-aal means "there is no one as kind as You." Mohi samsar paapee means "and no one as full of faults as me."

This is not about feeling worthless. It is about coming with empty hands. Think of a child running to a parent after a hard day. They do not bring a list of achievements. They just bring themselves and their need.

Kabir sets his own need beside the One's endless kindness. The bigger the need, the more room there is for that kindness to pour in.

A Question to Sit With

What does it feel like to ask for help without pretending you have it all figured out?
