Verse 2 of 3

Everyone Is a Beggar

tum Dhan Dhanee udaar ti-aagee saravnanH sunee-at sujas tumHaar.
You are the richest of the rich, generous and unattached. With my ears, I listen to Your Praises.
maaga-o kaahi rank sabh daykh-a-u tumH hee tay mayro nistaar. ||1||
From whom should I beg? I see that all are beggars. My salvation comes only from You. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

You are the richest of all, giving freely and holding onto nothing. My ears fill up with good things said about You.

Who else would I even ask? Look around — everyone is a beggar, needing something. Only You can carry me across.

Everyone is needy in some way — the One alone gives freely.
The deeper layer

tum dhan dhanee udaar ti-aagee — rich, generous, unattached. maaga-o kaahi rank sabh daykh-a-u — "whom should I beg? all are beggars." A leveling insight: rich and poor alike are needy before the One; only the Source gives freely.

A Question to Sit With

What is something money cannot buy that everyone still needs?
