Sikhism·Raag Bilaaval·Shabad 181
Verse 2 of 3

Just Remember, Simply

ਆਸਨੁ ਪਵਨ ਦੂਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਬਵਰੇ ॥
aasan pavan door kar bavray.
Abandon your Yogic postures and breath control exercises, O madman.
ਛੋਡਿ ਕਪਟੁ ਨਿਤ ਹਰਿ ਭਜੁ ਬਵਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
chhod kapat nit har bhaj bavray. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Renounce fraud and deception, and meditate continuously on the Lord, O madman. ||1||Pause||

In plain words

Set aside the special poses and the breath control, silly one.

Drop the pretending, and keep the One in mind every day, silly one.

Remembering the One is simpler and more direct than any technique.
The deeper layer

Drop the tricks and the pretending, and just remember the One.

It is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the one the shabad turns on. Aasan pavan door kar bavray — set aside the aasan, special body poses, and the pavan, breath control. Kabir means that fancy technique is not what brings you to the One. He is not scorning practice itself.

Chhod kapat nit har bhaj bavray — drop kapat, pretending, and keep the One in mind every day. Bavray means "silly one." It is a fond word, the way a grandparent might call you "you goose." Think of trying to reach a friend with a complicated secret code, when you could just call their name.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you overcomplicated that turned out to be simple?
