Sikhism·Raag Bilaaval·Shabad 182
Verse 3 of 3

Empty Shows Come to Nothing

ਕਿਆ ਖੇਤੀ ਕਿਆ ਲੇਵਾ ਦੇਈ ਪਰਪੰਚ ਝੂਠੁ ਗੁਮਾਨਾ ॥
ki-aa khaytee ki-aa layvaa day-ee parpanch jhooth gumaanaa.
What good is farming, and what good is trading? Worldly entanglements and pride are false.
ਕਹਿ ਕਬੀਰ ਤੇ ਅੰਤਿ ਬਿਗੂਤੇ ਆਇਆ ਕਾਲੁ ਨਿਦਾਨਾ ॥੨॥੯॥
kahi kabeer tay ant bigootay aa-i-aa kaal nidaanaa. ||2||9||
Says Kabir, in the end, they are ruined; ultimately, Death will come for them. ||2||9||

In plain words

Chasing bigger harvests, better deals, more and more — if it is all just for show and pride, it does not add up to much in the end.

Kabir says the puffed-up stuff quietly fades in the end. What lasts is what you built with the One at the center.

Work done only for show quietly fades; work rooted in the One lasts.
The deeper layer

Ki-aa khaytee ki-aa layvaa day-ee — what use is farming or trade when it is done for parpanch jhooth gumaanaa, show and pride? Honest work is good; ego-driven striving is what comes to nothing.

Aa-i-aa kaal nidaanaa — in the end, the time comes when every show is over. Everything puffed up fades; what is rooted in the One lasts.

A Question to Sit With

What is the difference between doing something to impress people and doing it because it matters?
