Sikhism·Raag Bilaaval·Shabad 183
Verse 3 of 4

Like a Leaf on the Water

ਆਵਤ ਕਛੂ ਨ ਦੀਸਈ ਨਹ ਦੀਸੈ ਜਾਤ ॥
aavat kachhoo na dees-ee nah deesai jaat.
Nothing is seen coming into the world, and nothing is seen leaving it.
ਜਹ ਉਪਜੈ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਤਹੀ ਜੈਸੇ ਪੁਰਿਵਨ ਪਾਤ ॥੨॥
jah upjai binsai tahee jaisay purivan paat. ||2||
Where the body is born, there it dies, like the leaves of the water-lily. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

If you look closely, you cannot quite catch the exact moment things arrive or leave. They just gently appear and gently pass.

A body comes and goes like a lily-leaf on a pond — floating for a while, then quietly gone. It is peaceful, not frightening.

Life floats and passes gently, like a leaf on a pond.
The deeper layer

aavat kachhoo na dees-ee nah deesai jaat — coming and going are imperceptible. jaisay purivan paat — like the water-lily leaf. Coming and going is gentle and natural, like a leaf floating on a pond; the same picture appears in Ravidas (Shabad 188).

A Question to Sit With

What is something in nature that reminds you things come and go peacefully?
