Sikhism·Raag Bilaaval·Shabad 20
Verse 3 of 4

What Holds Me Up

ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਆਧਾਰੁ ॥
parabh kaa naam man tan aaDhaar.
The Name of God is the Support of my mind and body.
ਬਿਸਰਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਹੋਵਤ ਤਨੁ ਛਾਰੁ ॥
bisrat naam hovat tan chhaar.
Forgetting the Naam, the Name of the Lord, the body is reduced to ashes.
ਪ੍ਰਭ ਚਿਤਿ ਆਏ ਪੂਰਨ ਸਭ ਕਾਜ ॥
parabh chit aa-ay pooran sabh kaaj.
When God comes into my consciousness, all my affairs are resolved.
ਹਰਿ ਬਿਸਰਤ ਸਭ ਕਾ ਮੁਹਤਾਜ ॥੩॥
har bisrat sabh kaa muhtaaj. ||3||
Forgetting the Lord, one becomes subservient to all. ||3||

In plain words

The Name — keeping the One in mind — is what holds up my mind and my body, like the frame that keeps a tent standing. Let that slip, and everything inside starts to feel dry and hollow.

But when the One fills my thoughts, things quietly work themselves out. Forget it, and I end up chasing after everyone and everything to feel okay.

Keeping the One in mind is the frame that everything else in you leans on.
The deeper layer

The Name is what holds us up.

Naam, the Name, means keeping the One in mind. The verse calls it aaDhaar, the support of mind and body. Think of the poles inside a tent. Take them out, and the whole tent sags.

The verse says that when the Name is forgotten, the body turns to chhaar, ashes. That is a strong way of saying life goes dry and hollow inside.

When the One fills the mind, pooran sabh kaaj — every task comes out whole. When the One is forgotten, a person becomes muhtaaj, dependent on everyone. It is like needing likes on every post just to feel okay.

A Question to Sit With

What is one steady thing that, when you hold onto it, makes the rest of your day fall into place?
