Bliss Fills The Home

ਚਰਨ ਕਮਲ ਸੰਗਿ ਲਾਗੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ॥
charan kamal sang laagee pareet.
I am in love with the Lotus Feet of the Lord.
ਬਿਸਰਿ ਗਈ ਸਭ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਰੀਤਿ ॥
bisar ga-ee sabh durmat reet.
I am rid of all evil-minded ways.
ਮਨ ਤਨ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਮੰਤ ॥
man tan antar har har mant.
The Mantra of the Lord's Name, Har, Har, is deep within my mind and body.
ਨਾਨਕ ਭਗਤਨ ਕੈ ਘਰਿ ਸਦਾ ਅਨੰਦ ॥੪॥੩॥
naanak bhagtan kai ghar sadaa anand. ||4||3||
O Nanak, eternal bliss fills the home of the Lord's devotees. ||4||3||

In plain words

My heart has fallen in love with the One's presence. As that love grew, my old unkind habits of thinking just fell away on their own.

The Name lives deep inside me now, in my mind and my whole body. Nanak says: in the home of those who love the One, a steady happiness fills the house and stays.

When love for the One moves in, unkind old habits quietly move out.
The deeper layer

When love moves in, bad habits move out.

Charan kamal, "lotus feet," is a loving way to speak of the One's presence. The seeker's heart has fastened onto it with love. Then bisar ga-ee sabh durmat reet — all the old habits of durmat, twisted thinking, were simply forgotten.

Nobody had to push them out. Think of switching on the light in a dark room. You do not have to sweep the dark away. Love came in, and the tangle loosened by itself.

The Name now lives deep in mind and body, like a mant, a word held close inside. And bhagtan kai ghar sadaa anand — joy always fills the home of those who love the One. That home is also the settled heart.

A Question to Sit With

Has caring about something good ever made a bad habit fade without you even fighting it?
