The Teaching And The Teacher

ਆਪਨ ਬਚਨੁ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਕਰਨਾ ॥
aapan bachan aap hee karnaa.
He Himself is the teaching, and He Himself is the teacher.
ਆਪਨ ਬਿਭਉ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਜਰਨਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
aapan bibha-o aap hee jarnaa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
He Himself is the splendor, and He Himself is the experiencer of it. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The One is the teaching, and the One is the teacher.

The One is all the splendor, and the One is the one who takes it in.

The wise words and the one who speaks them are the same One.
The deeper layer

The One is on every side of every experience. Here is the Rahao, the "pause" line at the center of the shabad.

Aapan bachan aap hee karnaa — the One is the teaching, and the One is the teacher. This echoes a Sikh idea: the Word itself is the Guru. Aapan bibha-o aap hee jarnaa — the One is the splendor, and the One is also the one who enjoys it.

Think of a sunset. The One is the colors in the sky, and also the eyes looking up in wonder. Speaker and speech, beauty and the one who sees it: all of it is one.

A Question to Sit With

When you learn something beautiful, is the learner ever separate from the thing learned?
