Sikhism·Raag Bilaaval·Shabad 3
Verse 4 of 5

When You Know You Belong, Fear Goes

ਚਖਿ ਛੋਡੀ ਸਹਸਾ ਨਹੀ ਕੋਇ ॥
chakh chhodee sahsaa nahee ko-ay.
I tasted Maya and renounced it, and now, I have no doubts.
ਬਾਪੁ ਦਿਸੈ ਵੇਜਾਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥
baap disai vayjaat na ho-ay.
One whose father is known, cannot be illegitimate.
ਏਕੇ ਕਉ ਨਾਹੀ ਭਉ ਕੋਇ ॥
aykay ka-o naahee bha-o ko-ay.
One who belongs to the One Lord, has no fear.
ਕਰਤਾ ਕਰੇ ਕਰਾਵੈ ਸੋਇ ॥੩॥
kartaa karay karaavai so-ay. ||3||
The Creator acts, and causes all to act. ||3||

In plain words

I have tried chasing the glitter, and I have let it go; now my heart is settled, free of that nagging doubt.

When you know you belong to the One who made you, you are never lost and never nameless. And the one who belongs to the One carries no fear at all, because the Creator is the very one at work in everything.

Knowing you belong to the One takes the fear out of everything.
The deeper layer

chakh chhodee sahsaa nahee ko-ay: having tasted it and let it go, no doubt remains. baap disai vayjaat na ho-ay: the child whose parent is known is never called nameless, read here as universal belonging to the One. aykay ka-o naahee bha-o ko-ay: the one who belongs to the One has no fear. kartaa karay karaavai so-ay: the Creator acts and moves all action. Belonging, not achievement, is what dissolves fear.

A Question to Sit With

When you feel you belong somewhere, what fears get quieter?
