Sikhism·Raag Bilaaval·Shabad 3
Verse 5 of 5

When the Restless Voice Grows Quiet

ਸਬਦਿ ਮੁਏ ਮਨੁ ਮਨ ਤੇ ਮਾਰਿਆ ॥
sabad mu-ay man man tay maari-aa.
One who dies in the Word of the Shabad conquers his mind, through his mind.
ਠਾਕਿ ਰਹੇ ਮਨੁ ਸਾਚੈ ਧਾਰਿਆ ॥
thaak rahay man saachai Dhaari-aa.
Keeping his mind restrained, he enshrines the True Lord within his heart.
ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਸੂਝੈ ਗੁਰ ਕਉ ਵਾਰਿਆ ॥
avar na soojhai gur ka-o vaari-aa.
He does not know any other, and he is a sacrifice to the Guru.
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਨਿਸਤਾਰਿਆ ॥੪॥੩॥
naanak naam ratay nistaari-aa. ||4||3||
O Nanak, attuned to the Naam, he is emancipated. ||4||3||

In plain words

When the restless, me-first voice inside grows quiet in the presence of the Word, the mind finally settles itself, from the inside out.

Held steady like that, the heart makes room for the True One. Nothing else compares to the Guru.

Nanak says: a heart soaked in the Naam is carried gently across to freedom.

When the noisy, me-first voice quiets, there is finally room for the True One.
The deeper layer

sabad mu-ay man man tay maari-aa: through the Word the ego-mind is stilled by the mind itself, ego as a habit to heal rather than an enemy to destroy. thaak rahay man saachai Dhaari-aa: held in check, it enshrines the True One. gur ka-o vaari-aa: wholly given to the Guru ("a sacrifice to the Guru"), so that nothing else compares. naam ratay nistaari-aa: soaked in the Name, one is carried across. The quieting of the noisy separate self is the gateway to freedom.

A Question to Sit With

What helps the loud, restless part of your mind settle down?
