Through the Guru's Word the Mind Settles into the One
ਬਿਲਾਵਲੁ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥
bilaaval mehlaa 1.
Bilaaval, First Mehl:
ਗੁਰ ਬਚਨੀ ਮਨੁ ਸਹਜ ਧਿਆਨੇ ॥
gur bachnee man sahj Dhi-aanay.
Through the Word of the Guru's Teachings, the mind intuitively meditates on the Lord.
ਹਰਿ ਕੈ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਤਾ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨੇ ॥
har kai rang rataa man maanay.
Imbued with the Lord's Love, the mind is satisfied.
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲੇ ਬਉਰਾਨੇ ॥
manmukhbharam bhulay ba-uraanay.
The insane, self-willed manmukhs wander around, deluded by doubt.
ਹਰਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਕਿਉ ਰਹੀਐ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਪਛਾਨੇ ॥੧॥
har bin ki-o rahee-ai gur sabad pachhaanay. ||1||
Without the Lord, how can anyone survive? Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, He is realized. ||1||
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
In plain words
When I take in the Guru's words, my restless mind grows quiet and rests. It has found where it belongs.
Coloured through with love for the One, the mind stops arguing and feels content. People who chase only their own wanting wander in circles, dizzy and lost.
How could anyone live cut off from the One? It is through the Guru's word that I recognize the One was here all along.
When you take the Guru's word in fully, the mind stops fighting and comes to rest.
The deeper layer
Sahj Dhi-aanay names an effortless settling — the mind meditating not by strain but by coming home. The manmukh (one who follows only their own head) is not condemned here so much as pictured as dizzy and lost, which is how separation feels.
A Question to Sit With
When has your mind gone quiet all on its own, because it finally felt at home?
