Deeper Than Any Bottom

ਗੁਣ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਗਹਿਰ ਗੰਭੀਰੇ ॥
gun bay-ant parabh gahir gambheeray.
His Glorious Virtues are infinite; God is profound and unfathomable.
ਊਚ ਮਹਲ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਮੇਰੇ ॥
ooch mahal su-aamee parabh mayray.
The Mansion of God, my Lord and Master, is lofty and high.

too aprampar thaakur mayray. ||1|| rahaa-o.
You are unlimited, O my Lord and Master. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

God, Your good qualities have no end. You are deep beyond any bottom.

My Master, Your home is high and grand. You have no limits at all, my Lord.

The One is deeper than any bottom and higher than any height you can picture — utterly without edges.
The deeper layer

At the center, the Rahao, the "pause" line: pure wonder at how vast the One is.

Gun bay-ant prabh gahir gambheeray — Your good qualities are endless, and You are deeper than any bottom. Ooch mahal — Your home is high. Too aprampar — You have no limits at all.

Deep, high, and without edges: the words pile up because no single word is big enough. The Sikh word for this feeling is bismaad, awe. It is the same wonder the shabad opened with, now looking at sheer size. Think of lying on the grass at night and trying to count the stars.

A Question to Sit With

When you look up at the night sky, what does without limits start to feel like?
