Verse 3 of 5

What Was Never Ours

ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਧਨੁ ਅਪਨਾ ਕਰਿ ਥਾਪਿਆ ॥
tan man Dhan apnaa kar thaapi-aa.
You hold onto your body, mind and wealth as your own,
ਕਰਨਹਾਰੁ ਇਕ ਨਿਮਖ ਨ ਜਾਪਿਆ ॥੨॥
karanhaar ik nimakh na jaapi-aa. ||2||
and you do not meditate on the Creator Lord, even for an instant. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

It is easy to grip your body, your thoughts, your things, and say mine, mine, mine — as if you made them and get to keep them forever.

But in all that gripping, the Maker who gave them slips out of mind. Even a moment of remembering would change everything.

We grip so tightly to mine that we forget the Maker who gave it all in the first place.
The deeper layer

Tan man dhan apnaa kar thaapi-aa — claiming body, mind, and wealth as one's own: the haumai reflex of "mine." Karanhaar ik nimakh na jaapi-aa — and the Creator who gave them is not held in mind even for an instant. The remedy is close: a single moment of remembering reopens what the gripping closed.

A Question to Sit With

What do you call mine that was given to you? Who or what gave it?
