In plain words

Mother, father, children, relatives, brothers and sisters — the people closest to you hold you up in a thousand ways.

Nanak says: underneath them all, the Supreme One has become our help.

Behind every hand that helps you, there is a deeper Help that never lets go.
The deeper layer

First come the people we love most, and then the One who holds us beneath them all.

Maat pitaa sut bandhap bhaa-ee means mother, father, children, relatives, and brothers and sisters. This is the whole circle of family.

Naanak ho-aa paarbarahm sahaa-ee means Nanak says the Supreme One has become our helper. Paarbarahm means the Supreme One, beyond everything. Sahaa-ee means helper and support.

This is not a slight to family. Family is real, and precious. Think of a house. The walls and the roof are the people who love you, and they keep you warm. But under the whole house is the ground, which never moves. The One is that ground, a support beneath all the others.

A Question to Sit With

Who are the people that hold you up — and can you feel the quiet steadiness underneath them too?
