Sikhism·Raag Bilaaval·Shabad 4
Verse 5 of 5

The Naam Is the Lasting Wealth

ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਵਿਛੁੜੈ ਖੋਟੀ ਰਾਸਿ ॥
manmukh vichhurhai khotee raas.
The self-willed manmukhs are separated from the Lord, gathering false wealth.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਸਾਬਾਸਿ ॥
gurmukh naam milai saabaas.
The Gurmukhs are celebrated with the glory of the Naam, the Name of the Lord.
ਹਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਧਾਰੀ ਦਾਸਨਿ ਦਾਸ ॥
har kirpaa Dhaaree daasan daas.
The Lord has showered His Mercy upon me, and made me the slave of His slaves.
ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਧਨੁ ਰਾਸਿ ॥੪॥੪॥
jan naanak har naam Dhan raas. ||4||4||
The Name of the Lord is the wealth and capital of servant Nanak. ||4||4||

In plain words

When we follow only our own wanting, we drift apart from the One and pile up a wealth that turns out to be fake — it looks like a lot and holds nothing.

But turned toward the Guru, we are handed the Name like a shout of welcome. Mercy came, and made me the servant of the One's servants.

Nanak says: the Naam is my wealth, the only wealth worth having.

The Name is the one wealth that is real and stays; the rest only looks like wealth.
The deeper layer

Khotee raas (counterfeit capital) versus har naam Dhan raas (the Name as true capital) is the whole shabad's ledger. Daasan daas — servant of servants — is Gurbani's humility that is freedom: the lowest place, chosen, where the ego finally lets go.

A Question to Sit With

What have you once treasured that turned out to be worth less than it looked?
