The One on Your Side

One who has the Merciful Lord God on his side - everyone becomes his slave.
ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਵਡਿਆਈਆ ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰ ਪਾਸਿ ॥੨॥੧੨॥੩੦॥
sadaa sadaa vadi-aa-ee-aa naanak gur paas. ||2||12||30||
Forever and ever, O Nanak, glorious greatness rests with the Guru. ||2||12||30||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

When the kind One is on your side, everyone gathers close, glad to help.

Nanak says: greatness rests with the Guru, forever and ever.

When kindness is on your side, you stop needing to fight the world.
The deeper layer

When the kind One is on your side, the whole world becomes your friend.

Jaa kaa ang da-i-aal parabh taa kay sabh daas — whoever has the merciful One on their side, everyone becomes their own. Daas means servant. Here it means that people gather close, glad to help. Think of a team where the kindest coach believes in you. Suddenly everyone is on your side.

Then: sadaa sadaa vadi-aa-ee-aa naanak gur paas — greatness rests forever with the Guru. Greatness is received, quietly, by staying near the Guru.

A Question to Sit With

When have you felt like something bigger was on your side?
