Sikhism·Raag Bilaaval·Shabad 48
Verse 3 of 5

Like a Dream at Night

ਜੈਸਾ ਸੁਪਨਾ ਰੈਨਿ ਕਾ ਤੈਸਾ ਸੰਸਾਰ ॥
jaisaa supnaa rain kaa taisaa sansaar.
This world is like a dream in the night.
ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿਮਾਨ ਸਭੁ ਬਿਨਸੀਐ ਕਿਆ ਲਗਹਿ ਗਵਾਰ ॥੨॥
daristimaan sabh binsee-ai ki-aa lageh gavaar. ||2||
All that is seen shall perish. Why are you attached to it, you fool? ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The world can feel as vivid as a dream while you are inside it — full of color and feeling.

But like a dream, it shifts and fades. So hold it lightly, gently; do not clench so tight that it hurts to let go.

Enjoy the world like a lovely dream, and hold it lightly.
The deeper layer

The world is like a dream you have at night.

In a dream, everything feels real. You can run, laugh, or be scared. Then you wake up, and it is gone. Jaisaa supnaa rain kaa taisaa sansaar — just like a night's dream is this world. Everything we can see will pass.

The verse ends with a sharp word, gavaar, which means "fool": why hold on so tightly? Think of it as a friend giving you a firm nudge, not a name to call yourself. Enjoy the dream, but hold it lightly. Then letting go, when the time comes, does not hurt so much.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you are holding a little too tightly right now?
