Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
When God is kind, I am drawn to loving devotion.
My mind was clinging to its cravings. Meeting the Guru, I let them go.
Loving the One begins as a gift, and the Guru helps us put down what we cling to.
This is the Rahao, the "pause" line. It is the center of the shabad.
Jau prabh jee-o daiaal ho-ay, tau bhagtee laaga-o means "when the Lord is kind, I am joined to bhagtee." Bhagtee means loving devotion. It comes from grace, a gift we receive, not something we earn.
Lapat rahio man baasnaa, gur mil ih tiaaga-o means "my mind was clinging to its wants; meeting the Guru, I let them go." Baasnaa means the deep wants and cravings the mind holds on to.
Picture a small child gripping a toy so tight their knuckles go white. A kind grown-up sits down beside them, and slowly the fingers relax. The Guru's company does that for the mind.
What is a habit you would like to gently set down?
