I am a sinner, continuously making mistakes; You are the Forgiving Lord. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

All my pride is in You, my dearest Beloved.

I keep slipping up and making mistakes. You are the One who forgives.

Being forgiven again and again is its own kind of belonging.
The deeper layer

All my pride rests in the One who forgives.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad.

Maan kara-o tudh oopray — my only pride is You. Maan means pride, or trust. Then the verse names our mistakes honestly: ham apraadhee sad bhooltay, we keep slipping up. Right beside that stands tum bakhsanhaaray, You are the One who forgives.

The mistakes are named lightly, so the weight falls on forgiveness, not guilt. It is like a child who spills the milk and runs to a parent, sure of a hug.

A Question to Sit With

What does it feel like to be forgiven by someone who loves you?
