Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Some days I get pulled toward all sorts of shiny distractions and forget to even think of You. That is just honest.
And still — You keep giving. You never stop being generous, even on the days I wander off. That kindness is bigger than my forgetting.
The Giver keeps giving, even when we forget.
Tumh nirgun daataaray — You give freely, even to those with nothing to show. Nirgun here means without good qualities.
The verse also names daasee sangat, keeping company with the maidservant. The maidservant is maya, the pull of shiny things. She serves the One, but she can distract us. We follow the maid and forget the Master. The self-critique is honest but light. The real point is how generous the Giver is, with no conditions. Think of a grandparent who keeps slipping you snacks, even on days you forgot to call.
Who keeps being kind to you even when you forget to notice?
