Verse 4 of 5

Loving the Gifts, Learning to Love the Giver

ਤੁਮ੍ਹ੍ਹ ਦੇਵਹੁ ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਦਇਆ ਧਾਰਿ ਹਮ ਅਕਿਰਤਘਨਾਰੇ ॥
tumH dayvhu sabh kichh da-i-aa Dhaar ham akirat-ghanaaray.
You bless me with everything, showering me with Mercy; And I am such an ungrateful wretch!
ਲਾਗਿ ਪਰੇ ਤੇਰੇ ਦਾਨ ਸਿਉ ਨਹ ਚਿਤਿ ਖਸਮਾਰੇ ॥੩॥
laag paray tayray daan si-o nah chit khasmaaray. ||3||
I am attached to Your gifts, but I do not even think of You, O my Lord and Master. ||3||

In plain words

You hand me good things all the time. And I will admit — sometimes I get so busy enjoying the gifts that I forget the One who gave them.

So this is me remembering: behind every good thing is You. Let me love the Giver, not just the presents.

Enjoy the gift — but do not forget who gave it.
The deeper layer

It is easy to love the gifts and forget the Giver.

Tumh dayvhu sabh kichh — You give me everything. Laag paray tayray daan si-o nah chit khasmaaray — I cling to Your gifts and forget You, my Master. Daan means gift.

It is like a birthday where you tear open every present and forget to hug the person who gave them. This is a very human habit. The verse names it without shaming, so we can notice it and turn back.

A Question to Sit With

When you get something you love, do you remember to thank the person behind it?
