There Is Nothing Outside of You

ਤੁਝ ਤੇ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਕਿਛੁ ਨਹੀ ਭਵ ਕਾਟਨਹਾਰੇ ॥
tujh tay baahar kichh nahee bhav kaatanhaaray.
There is none other than You, O Lord, Destroyer of fear.
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਰਣਿ ਦਇਆਲ ਗੁਰ ਲੇਹੁ ਮੁਗਧ ਉਧਾਰੇ ॥੪॥੪॥੩੪॥
kaho naanak saran da-i-aal gur layho mugaDh uDhaaray. ||4||4||34||
Says Nanak, I have come to Your Sanctuary, O Merciful Guru; I am so foolish - please, save me! ||4||4||34||

In plain words

There is nowhere fear can hide from You — You are the one who ends it. Nothing exists outside of You.

Nanak says: here I am in Your shelter, kind Guru. I have got a lot to learn — lift me up and help me grow. I am safe with You.

When nothing is outside the One, there is nowhere for fear to hide.
The deeper layer

Nothing is outside the One, so the shelter is everywhere.

Tujh tay baahar kichh nahee — nothing is outside You. The One is bhav kaatanhaaray, the One who cuts away fear.

Then Nanak asks: mugadh udhaaray, lift up this foolish one. Mugadh means simple, or foolish. Here it sounds like "I have a lot to learn; help me grow." Self-blame turns into openness to grace. Think of a small child reaching up to be carried, trusting the arms will be there.

A Question to Sit With

Where do you feel safest — and what makes it feel that way?
