Verse 3 of 5

As You Keep Me, So I Am

ਜਿਉ ਤੁਮ੍ਹ੍ਹ ਰਾਖਹੁ ਤਿਉ ਰਹਾ ਅਵਰੁ ਨਹੀ ਚਾਰਾ ॥
ji-o tumH raakho ti-o rahaa avar nahee chaaraa.
As You keep me, I remain; there is no other way.
ਨੀਧਰਿਆ ਧਰ ਤੇਰੀਆ ਇਕ ਨਾਮ ਅਧਾਰਾ ॥੨॥
neeDhri-aa Dhar tayree-aa ik naam aDhaaraa. ||2||
You are the Support of the unsupported; You Name is my only Support. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

However life holds me, that is how I will be — there is no fighting the current here.

For anyone with nothing to lean on, You are the leaning-place. Your Name is my one steady support.

You can stop fighting the current and still stay afloat.
The deeper layer

As You keep me, so I stay.

Ji-o tum raakho ti-o rahaa — as You keep me, I remain; needhri-aa dhar tayree-aa — You are the support of those with no support. This is natural ease: resting in what is, with ik naam adhaaraa, the Name as the one anchor.

A Question to Sit With

What is your steady support when everything else feels shaky?
