Sikhism·Raag Bilaaval·Shabad 58
Verse 4 of 5

I Come With Empty Hands

ਉਕਤਿ ਸਿਆਨਪ ਕਛੁ ਨਹੀ ਨਾਹੀ ਕਛੁ ਘਾਲ ॥
ukat si-aanap kachh nahee naahee kachh ghaal.
I have no skill or wisdom at all, nor any work to my credit.
ਭ੍ਰਮ ਭੈ ਰਾਖਹੁ ਮੋਹ ਤੇ ਕਾਟਹੁ ਜਮ ਜਾਲ ॥੩॥
bharam bhai raakho moh tay kaatahu jam jaal. ||3||
Please, protect me from doubt, fear and emotional attachment, and cut away the noose of Death from my neck. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I do not come with clever tricks or a long list of great deeds to show off. My hands are pretty empty, honestly.

So keep me safe from fear and from getting stuck on things — and free me from anything that would tie me down.

You do not need to show up impressive — just open and honest.
The deeper layer

Ukat siaanap kachh nahee — no clever words, no skill of my own, no deeds to show. Kaatahu jam jaal — cut the noose of Death, everything that ties us down: doubt, fear and clinging. Empty hands are honest hands, and grace meets you there.

A Question to Sit With

Is it okay to ask for help even when you have nothing to offer back?
