Sikhism·Raag Bilaaval·Shabad 6
Verse 4 of 5

Even the World's Dazzle Comes From the One

ਮਾਇਆ ਕਾ ਰੂਪੁ ਸਭੁ ਤਿਸ ਤੇ ਹੋਇ ॥
maa-i-aa kaa roop sabh tis tay ho-ay.
All the forms of Maya emanate from Him.
ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਮੇਲੇ ਸੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਹੋਇ ॥
jis no maylay so nirmal ho-ay.
He alone becomes pure and immaculate, who is united with the Lord.
ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਲਾਏ ਲਗੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਆਇ ॥
jis no laa-ay lagai tis aa-ay.
He alone is attached, whom the Lord attaches.
ਸਭੁ ਸਚੁ ਦਿਖਾਲੇ ਤਾ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੩॥
sabh sach dikhaalay taa sach samaa-ay. ||3||
All Truth is revealed to him, and then, he merges in the True Lord. ||3||

In plain words

Every shimmering shape the world wears comes from the One too.

Whoever the One draws close becomes clear and clean inside. You reach toward the One only because the One reaches first — and once the One shows you all of Truth, you merge into the True One.

Even the world's dazzle flows from the One; closeness, not scrubbing, is what makes a heart clear.
The deeper layer

Even the shine of the world comes from the One.

Maa-i-aa (Maya) is the world's dazzle, the bright pull of things we want. The verse says maa-i-aa kaa roop sabh tis tay ho-ay: every form of that dazzle comes from the One. So the world is not an enemy.

Then comes a surprise about being pure. Jis no maylay so nirmal ho-ay: whoever the One draws close becomes clean inside. Purity comes from being close to the One, not from scrubbing ourselves harder. It is like a cold child who gets warm by being hugged, not by trying hard to be warm. And the reaching starts from the One's side first.

A Question to Sit With

How does being close to someone you admire quietly make you more like your best self?
