Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Hold on to the feet of even the youngest helper of the humble saints.

Let go of chasing the rich, and the kings under their royal umbrellas.

You do not have to chase the powerful to be around what matters.
The deeper layer

This is the "Rahao" line, the pause, the center of the shabad. Sant janaa kaa chhohraa tis charnee laag — stay close to even the youngest helper of the humble saints. A chhohraa is a young serving boy. So even the smallest helper in a good household is worth learning from.

Then: maa-i-aadhaaree chhatarpat tin chhoda-o ti-aag — let go of chasing the rich, and the kings who sit under royal umbrellas.

Picture choosing where to sit at lunch. The popular table looks shiny. The kind table is where you actually grow. The verse moves real worth away from power and toward humility.

A Question to Sit With

Who is someone quiet and kind you could learn a lot from?
