An Old Blanket That Keeps You Warm

ਭਗਤ ਜਨਾ ਕਾ ਲੂਗਰਾ ਓਢਿ ਨਗਨ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥
bhagat janaa kaa loograa odh nagan na ho-ee.
Wearing the old blankets of the humble devotees, one is not naked.
ਸਾਕਤ ਸਿਰਪਾਉ ਰੇਸਮੀ ਪਹਿਰਤ ਪਤਿ ਖੋਈ ॥੩॥
saakat sirpaa-o raysmee pahirat pat kho-ee. ||3||
But by putting on the silk clothes of the faithless cynic, one loses one's honor. ||3||

In plain words

A worn-out blanket from a kind, humble friend keeps you warm and covered — it does its job with love.

But fine silk handed over coldly, to buy your loyalty, leaves you feeling worse than before. Warmth beats show.

Warmth given with love beats finery given coldly.
The deeper layer

Warmth matters more than show. Bhagat janaa kaa loograa odh nagan na ho-ee — wrap yourself in the old blanket of the devotees, and you are never left uncovered. A loograa is a worn, simple blanket.

Then: saakat sirpaa-o raysmee pahirat pat kho-ee — put on silk robes from the saakat, the one turned away from the One, and you lose your honor. Such gifts often come with strings attached.

Think of a hand-knitted scarf from your grandmother next to a designer jacket from someone who only wants to use you. The scarf keeps you warm in more ways than one. What is real counts more than what looks rich.

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever gotten something fancy that did not feel as good as something simple and warm?
