Friendship That Lasts

ਸਾਕਤ ਸਿਉ ਮੁਖਿ ਜੋਰਿਐ ਅਧ ਵੀਚਹੁ ਟੂਟੈ ॥
saakat si-o mukh jori-ai aDh veechahu tootai.
Friendship with the faithless cynic breaks down mid-way.
ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਜੋ ਕਰੇ ਇਤ ਊਤਹਿ ਛੂਟੈ ॥੪॥
har jan kee sayvaa jo karay it ooteh chhootai. ||4||
But whoever serves the humble servants of the Lord, is emancipated here and hereafter. ||4||

In plain words

Some friendships built on nothing real fall apart halfway through — they just cannot hold.

But show up for good people, help them, walk with them, and that bond carries you through — here and everywhere.

The friendships that last are the ones built on something real.
The deeper layer

Some bonds last, and some break. Saakat si-o mukh jori-ai adh veechahu tootai — a friendship with someone turned away from the One breaks down halfway.

Then: har jan kee sayvaa jo karay it ooteh chhootai — whoever serves the Lord's people is set free, here and in the world beyond.

Think of two kinds of friends. One sticks around only while you have the newest game. The other helps you study when things get hard. The first fades when the game gets old. The second grows stronger over the years. Good bonds last because they are built on something real.

A Question to Sit With

What makes a friendship strong enough to last?
