Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

They are my true friends, and I am the dust of their feet.

When I meet them, I am at peace. They give me the gift of life.

The friends who make you kinder are the ones worth keeping close.
The deeper layer

The Guru's people are true friends, and being near them brings peace.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad.

O-ay hamaaray saajnaa ham un kee rayn — they are my friends, and I am the dust of their feet. Saajan means a true friend. Rayn means dust. Being the dust of their feet is deep humility and belonging, not wiping yourself out.

Jee-a daan dayn — they give the gift of the soul. Jee-a means life, or soul. Some friends make you feel more alive, like a team that brings out your best game.

A Question to Sit With

Who are the friends who leave you more at peace than you were before?
