In plain words

Only the one who sings the praises of the One crosses this wide ocean of the world.

That one lives in the Sangat, and by great good fortune finds the One.

The Sangat helps you cross the waters you cannot cross alone.
The deeper layer

Singing the One's praises carries you across the ocean of life. Ih saagar so-ee tarai jo har gun gaa-ay — only the one who sings the Lord's praises crosses this ocean. The ocean is the world, with all its pulls and storms.

Think of swimming across a wide lake. Alone it feels endless. With a team boat beside you, you make it to the far shore.

Then: saadhsangat kai sang vasai — that person lives in the Sangat — people gathered together to remember the One. Vadbhaagee paa-ay — by great good fortune, they find the One. The Sangat and good fortune work together. The shabad opens on the crossing.

A Question to Sit With

Who helps you get through the hard, choppy stretches?
