Your Best Friend Is Right Here

ਹਰਿ ਸੰਗਿ ਸਹਾਈ ਮਹਾ ਮੀਤੁ ਤਿਸ ਸਿਉ ਤੇਰਾ ਭੇਦੁ ॥
har sang sahaa-ee mahaa meet tis si-o tayraa bhayd.
The Lord is your Companion, your Helper, your Best Friend; but you disagree with Him.
ਬੀਧਾ ਪੰਚ ਬਟਵਾਰਈ ਉਪਜਿਓ ਮਹਾ ਖੇਦੁ ॥੩॥
beeDhaa panch batvaara-ee upji-o mahaa khayd. ||3||
You are in love with the five thieves; this brings terrible pain. ||3||

In plain words

The One is right beside you — your helper, your very best friend — yet somehow you keep arguing and holding apart.

Getting tangled up with the five pulls — anger, greed, and their friends — is what brings deep pain.

The pain often comes from arguing with the very friend who is closest.
The deeper layer

Your best friend is right beside you. Har sang sahaa-ee mahaa meet — the Lord is your companion, your helper, your best friend. Tis si-o tayraa bhayd — yet you keep yourself apart from Him. It is a strange distance to keep from the nearest friend.

Think of sulking in your room while your best friend waits at the door.

Then: beedhaa panch batvaara-ee — you are hooked by the five thieves. These are five pulls inside us: desire, anger, greed, clinging and pride. They are called thieves because they quietly steal our peace. Upji-o mahaa khayd — and that brings deep pain.

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever pushed away someone who was only trying to help?
