Even better than being awake, is the dream in which I dwell with God. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

When will I see my God, and my soul light up with joy?

Better than being awake is the dream where I live with God.

Longing to be near what you love is itself a kind of nearness.
The deeper layer

Even a dream of being near the One is sweeter than being awake.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad.

Kab daykh-a-u prabh aapnaa — when will I see my One? Aatam kai rang — with the soul lit up in delight. Aatam means the soul, the deepest self.

Jaagan tay supnaa bhalaa, basee-ai prabh sang — better than being awake is the dream in which I live with the One. Think of dreaming about a grandparent who lives far away. You wake up wishing you could stay in that dream a little longer. This pause line is pure longing to see the One.

A Question to Sit With

Who or what do you most look forward to being close to?
